Final Project

My company Tilt-A-Swirl Frozen Yogurt, is a self-serve frozen yogurt place that I would locate in my hometown York, PA. There is only one other frozen yogurt place in my town, and there is only one location which is on the other side of town for some people. If i were to open up this business, I would have multiple locations. The theme of my company is the circus/carnival. My intended audience is children and parents. The atmosphere would be fun and playful like a circus and if customers are unable to think of combinations of yogurt and topping we offer our company favorites, which also correlate with our theme. Combinations like lion tamer and fun house. The grey area in the JPG images were only used for cutting purposes, so I would be able to cut the tent stripes since it is white and red.

Brochure and Business Card Mockups/Sketches

My company Tilt-A-Swirl Frozen Yogurt is a carnival themed self serve frozen yogurt place. I wanted to incorporate the carnival tent/pattern in both my business card and brochure. Instead of doing a brochure I thought it would be appropriate to make a menu. I wanted to stick to red, white and blue for a color theme and correlate my menu and card so they kind of go together. These are just a few ideas I came up for each.

Cooperate Identity Questionnaire

1)   What is your business?
Self-serve frozen yogurt

2)   Describe your business in one sentence
We offer a variety of flavors of frozen yogurt and many different toppings, and customers are able to create whatever gets their taste buds watering.

3)   Who is your target audience?
Children ages 3-10, parents, teachers, children based organizations.

4)   Who are your competitors?
Sweet Frog Frozen Yogurt

5)   What makes them better/worse than your product/service?
Sweet Frog is currently the only frozen yogurt place in York, PA. It has a lot of choices for toppings and is continually switching out flavors. Their target audience is also children, they have a frog mascot that comes into the stores. What isn’t good is they only have one location, and for some customers it is a hike to get there. They are actually religiously affiliated, which could turn some customers away.

1)   How do you want your image to be seen in two years?
We want Tilt-A-Swirl to have several locations that are all the same environment and offer families with young children a fun, clean, and cheap place to treat their kids. I want to company to offer more flavors and toppings than competitors and offer different activities and fundraisers to help out the community and promote the business.

2)   If your company was an animal, what animal would it be and why?
A lion, because it fits in with the company theme of a Circus. It also represents the company as the king or leader of the business. Or an elephant because they are a large animal, so it could represent that the company is bigger than the others.

3)   If your company/brand was a person, who would it be and why?
The Ringling Brothers because they are one of the most famous people who own/started a circus. Their circus business is one of the most well known out of all circuses, and when you hear the name you automatically know who they are and what they do.

4)   If your company/brand was an object, what would it be?
A Carnival Tent, a ring of fire, a Farris wheel.

5)   If your customer was a cartoon character, who would it be?
Dumbo because little kids would be attracted to him since he is a well known character. He is the protagonist in the movie, and that will represent the company well. We want to be known as the good guys.

Lyrical Collage

I chose the song Lay Me Down by my favorite band The Dirty Heads. The song is about a couple who is running away to somewhere by a beach. In my piece I had incorporated fish and a girl swimming in a boy's blue eyes. This helps represent the line "I said it's hot outside, let me go swimming in your eyes" I also found a picture of a sunset and then I added a picture of a couple into the beach scene. I used a total of 5 different images in this piece.

below I have included the original images.

In class exercise

First I made adjustments to the photo by using the smooth tool to get rid of extra wrinkles and the clone tool to get rid of any grey hair. Then I took the logo images and using a variety of selection tools i removed them from their original files. I inserted gradients to enhance the banners and used simple colors. I tried to combine objects to make them look more uniform (ABC and Jay Adams).

Custom Graphic

I created a brush using a picture of Audrey Hepburn. I changed the levels of the picture to create a silhouette. I then found another brush online and used it as the background lace pattern. Lastly I added a gradient to the background to make the composition pop more. I used the elements of design through texture (background, lace, color streaks), color (gradient), and line and shape in the use of the silhouette. I used the principles of design through repetition, gradient, harmony and unity.

Vector Illustration

For my vector illustration I chose to do a Volkswagen Bus. One day I hope to own one. I am pretty familiar with Adobe Illustrator and have created vectors of people before, and I wanted to try something I haven't tried before. I thought this project was a lot of fun and I learned how to use different effects to make the vector look more realistic, by adding shadows and highlights.

Project 2 - Final Logo: Tilt A Swirl Frozen Yogurt

My company Tilt A Swirl Frozen Yogurt, is a company that I thought would do really well in my home town back in Pennsylvania. There is only one self serve frozen yogurt place, and it is always packed with people especially children. Tilt A Swirl is a self serve frozen yogurt company that is carnival themed on the inside and has carnival themed flavors and toppings. The company would even offer ideas on how to make certain frozen yogurts like "The Lion Tamer" which would be butterscotch and strawberry frozen yogurt, frosted animal crackers, peanuts, and a strand of licorice. I think that since back home there aren't many frozen yogurt places, this business would do really well.

I wanted to keep the logo fairly simple. The A is suppose to represent the opening of a carnival tent. I also wanted to incorporate the theme of a carnival further by adding the subtle ferris wheel in the background. I chose the colors red and blue because they are primary colors and they look good together. I chose a font size big enough that if shrunken down is still somewhat visible. I think the simple shapes and line usage get the message across simply, but creatively.

Logo Critique

Here is the first idea that I came up with for our first critique for the logo assignment. I am having a hard time finding a font that works.

Caligramme: Under the Sea

I created a octopus using different sizes of the same font. I used different sizes of the font to help with the clarity of the image. The smaller the font is the shaper the lines turned out. I wanted to take something kind of complex and simplify it as much as I could. I chose the color purple because it is a common color that people associate with octopus. It says "under the sea"

I also did a caligramme of my favorite musician Jared Watson. In addition to the text tools, I used clipping masks to help form the shapes and the text together. The words I chose to use were "stand tall" it is the title of one of the bands popular songs. I actually have "Stand Tall" tattooed on my foot, so the saying actually has a lot of meaning to me.

Assignment 2

This frozen yogurt company has an effective logo because it is funny and the yogurt swirl is incorporated into another graphic. I like color scheme as well. I think that logos that include what their product/business is about along with something that will help customers remember it. This logo uses the yogurt swirl as hair. The name of the company is funny too, this adds to the effectiveness.

This frozen yogurt company came up with a icon to use for their company. Sometimes businesses create mascots for their businesses. Within the text the swirl is used as an apostrophe. The color scheme is effective too because it is clearly aimed for children since it is bright and there is a child friendly mascot.

This logo is effective because the T is actually an ice cream cone. The font works with the T and flows well next to the ice cream cone. The word placement is done well, by putting Ice Cream Co. underneath the w and i in twist. I really like the fact that a graphic is incorporated into the words. I think companies that do this with their logos are more effective.

The Kolner Zoo logo is extremely effective because it uses positive/negative space to get its message across. There is a Rhino an Giraffe within the elephant. This logo also uses complimentary colors in the text. When complimentary colors are next to each other they stand out more. For a zoo this is a great logo because it represents the business well since more than one animal is represented. I think it is very fun and cute, yet simple and is definitely a logo that people will remember, which is important when creating a logo.

The Burger King logo is effective because the text itself is within burger buns. This is a great way to subtly include the image of burger within the logo. Logos that include what their company is mainly about in the logo is effective, because it helps customers remember why they are different and what they have. The color scheme is also effective since they are primary colors, so it is simple yet effective.

The Le Tour de France logo is effective because the letter R is also a person riding a bike. I think the way the letters work into the graphic is effective and creative. The color scheme is also effective because it is simple since one wheel of the bike is the only thing that is yellow. Although there is an extra shape (the yellow circle) it is not confused with the text and the logo itself is fairly easy to ready and understand.

ASC II Project

I created the nyan cat using HTML codes. I tried to stick to mostly basic shapes. I used a lot of rectangles. I started with the pop tart body and then did the rainbow. Eventually I added the cat features and added stars to the background. This is my first experience using HTML, I would consider myself almost expert in illustrator and photoshop, so this was very different and challenging since it's all codes instead of creating shapes yourself in illustrator. It is very time consuming, but it help me better understand how exactly illustrator works.

I'm Justine Parks a freshman at University of Tampa. I am majoring in Graphic Design. Hopefully after graduating I will land a job in a magazine or newspaper publication. I am very intrigued by page layout design. My hometown is York, PA and I have been taking graphic design classes since my freshman year in high school. I currently work for the universities newspaper and in high school I was arts editor and editor-in-chief of the school's magazine. From the class ART 210 I would like to learn more ways to navigate through design software such as illustrator and photoshop. I would also like to learn programing and web design.
